A collection of 11 aesthetic themes explored through development boards and a corresponding furnishing palette. Adobe Photoshop, InDesign.
TEXT In the 1960’s, suburban Californians took their backyards seriously. They were the centers of socialization and entertaining in many communities, and a little showing off your style was more than welcome. One part Tiki, one part brutalism; my take on this theme celebrates both the outdoors and in, along with the beautiful spaces in between. Exteriors should be fully furnished, like a room, and heavily planted. Interiors should be luxe and provocative, with masculine furniture, tropical prints and brass-plated trappings. Think James Bond goes to Rio. The end result is adventurous, sexy and confident.
Soundtrack: Pink Martini,
Sammy Davis Jr.
TEXT: As much as things change, as much they stay the same. This décor scheme is the stuff of the zeitgeist; from WASPy Ralph Lauren ads, elitist education, and male fantasy, comes this design classic. Traditional and astute, this one never looses influence or relevance. Spaces in line with this heritage are designed to stimulate the mind while keeping the body calm. They are incubators of thought, sanctuaries built for conversation and study. Create a symmetrical seating group, ideally with tufted brown leather furniture. Organize a feast for the eyes with books and curiosities. Make references to science, history, art, and sports. Focus on creating atmospheric lighting and interesting shadows. Now hit the books.
Soundtrack: The Kinks, Nada Surf
TEXT: From a bleak and challenging landscape comes a refined culture that deeply appreciates the built environment.
Coorperation is foundational in Scandanavian society, and nowhere is that more apparent than in their best known export- design. Scandinavians live mostly indoors, and have learned to do so quite comfortably by sharing sharing resources and looking out for eachother. This design focuses on practicality, minimalism, and cleanliness. Warm woods provide the foundation of the aesthetic, lithe metals hold everything together, colorful textiles and art provide cheer, while smart geometric prints keep the mind humming. The whole home should function together, like a machine, supporting the life within.
Soundtrack: Sigur Ros,
Explosions in the Sky
TEXT: From Walden Pond to Woodstock. Haight/Ashbury to the Brooklyn Flea Market. The ever appealing and influential Bohemian approach to design has the ability to change with the times while retaining its soulful identity- celebrating global culture and art, sharing in the creative process, and strengthening human bonds. Boho spaces should encourage group interaction, seating arrangements should get a great deal of focus, as they should be adaptable, circular, and ideally close to the ground. Upscale furniture of yesteryear, folk art, and references to nature and mysticism should abound. The eye should drift through warmly lit spaces full of beautiful things. Every room is a blank canvas, a place to experience and appreciate life.
Soundtrack: Blind Melon,
The Mamas and The Papas
TEXT: Nostalgic and protective, cabin design has changed very little over the generations. This scheme is rugged yet lighthearted, and is full to the brim with salt of the earth charm. It is right at home in the country or the mountains, but makes a great juxtaposition in urban homes as well. To get there, woods should be solid and natural looking, use river stones to anchor the focal point, and place trophies at the crown of these proud rooms. Textured tile, plaid fabrics and American tribal prints will punch it up and keep it cozy. This scheme has mass appeal and the design is very straightforward, it is less focused on individual expression, but rather on appreciation for things that do not need to change.
Soundtrack: Neil Young,
Nick Drake
TEXT: Millennials are unpredictable. As the first generation to grow up on the internet, they are spoiled by too much information and too many choices. Not to follow in the steps of their elders, this generation has forgone the white picket fences and SUV’s of the baby boomers, and are instead an increasingly individualistic, urbane and mobile demographic. Their style is daring and austere; reliving the days of early 90’s underground dance. Displaying androgynous draping and a color palette torn form the pages of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the look declares the identity crisis of the early 2000’s to be over. Interior design reflects these same sensibilities. Earth tones, accent walls, and overstuffed furniture are out- white gallery walls, skeletal furniture, and macabre conversation pieces are in. To brighten things up are kitschy cartoon prints, bold florals, and neon color pops. There future is here, and so are the cat videos.
Soundtrack: Crystal Castles, New Order
TEXT: Among the rolling farmland and stone villages of Provence is a rich life in step with the beautiful surroundings. Provencals are masters of food, wine, and habitude. And from the birthplace of rosé and denim has come a treasury of timeless design. The built environment here pays great respect to its location, appearing as if it is an extension of the ever-blooming landscape. This heavenly design concept focuses on warm, airy spaces, defined by rustic materials- like wood beams, brick, and stone. Focus on cooking and eating, create informal spaces and outdoor gathering areas. Plant flowers and use barn hardware indoors and out. Avoid bright colors and distractions; this concept is a romance between us and the land we live on.
Soundtrack: Beirut, Chopin
TEXT: Humans are inherently drawn to the beach, their mysterious beauty is forever intriguing us. The edge of our habitats, they stimulate our urge to explore while remaining ever peaceful. Waves keep a calm pace, as tall grasses sway in the cool, salty air; the open ocean and infinite sky meet somewhere in the distance… Beaches offer a wealth of design inspiration; this theme seeks to create a space of harmony and ease. Simple pleasures like calm breezes and filtered natural light should be highlighted. Stick with a washed out color palette of grays, blues and whites. Use weathered materials and soothing art with strong vanishing points. Upholster in linen and seersucker. Natural pieces plucked from the sand, like driftwood and shells, make a great finishing touch.
Soundtrack: The Ventures,
Beach House (band)
TEXT: Tokyo, a world in non-stop motion. Growth and decay are both constants- humans, buildings and noise are everywhere. This is the bleeding edge of design, looking forward as far as our minds and technology allow us. Such an overstimulating environment is sure to produce a potent counterculture. It is here, catacombs, the underground; where networks of musicians and artists thrive. This theme is edgy and moves with the current, it is fashioned for creatures of the night. When taking on this theme, lift visual cues from dystopian cinema like Metropolis (1927), Akira (1988) and Blade Runner (1982). Consider this concept in spaces used for music, parties and nightlife. This visual environment is best suited for sequential spaces with long corridors and few windows. Focus not on creating light, but instead on shadow. Use street art and comic-book imagery alongside gritty punk elements and slick furniture. Many materials should be reflective and dark, others should be left
unfinished.
Soundtrack: Deadma5, NEU!
TEXT: Memories created in great family homes can stay with us for a lifetime. This design explores the relationship between design and memory, how in these homes we remember both the physical design itself and the healthy activity fostered by it. Tried and true family homes are places of common ground, built specifically to enhance human relationships. This theme flows from the desire to create those places, where generations of family and friends can gather, creating both traditions and memories. At the soul of this theme is Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer, a beloved symbol of youth and adventure, coming of age on the banks of the Mississippi. This theme is specified for vacation homes and old houses in scenic settings. The home should be built with great respect to its location, and should feature an inviting front door and large wood decks. Center the furniture plan around a farm table and create many flexible sitting groups of sturdy modern furniture and casual textiles. Apply to walls watercolor paintings and bucolic prints from artists like Norman Rockwell and Currier and Ives. Outdoors, plant birch and willow, build stone paths, and create places to sit and observe the natural surroundings. Avoid contemporary pieces and high tech, and embrace the creaks and stale smells. These homes return the love they receive, take care of it and it will care of you.
Soundtrack: Creedence Clearwater Revival,
Nick Drake
TEXT: Sometimes, taking the low road is the superior choice. We all have our guilty pleasures, and should indulge them from time to time. This one lands somewhere between the kitschy 50’s and tacky 80’s; a greatest hits of campy, low design with a charm all its own. My take on this concept is a melding of many well intentioned design styles, including Rockabilly, Drag and Googie. Although this concept can make a strong statement on individuality, most elements of this composition are mass produced and readily available. Follow in the footsteps of masters like Jon Waters, Sailor Jerry and Memphis Design. Furnish with cheap vintage furniture, decorate with pop art, densely packed shrines, collectable oddities and Velvet Elvis’. Pepper rooms with Mexicana and holiday decorations year round. When good taste is not an option, there is no use in practicing restraint.
Soundtrack: B-52’s,
Dolly Parton

The inspiration for this space originated within the New York City street grid, more specifically; the intersections. Formed by straight streets and tall corners, these intersections enable ease of movement while the architectural canyon walls frame infinite vistas. The basis of the design came from the desire to create a single perfect shape that can be repeated and arranged to form a grid, a network of corridors and small spaces. The perfect shape, a 5x symmetrical cruciform corner, made of 4 identical 'fins', are ordered strategically to create strong paths and circulation through the space, while creating manageable and adaptable spaces for the changing retail needs of the tenant. I soon realized that these shapes could penetrate a central floor plate and carve space simultaneously on both floors. On the first floor, the cruciforms suspend from the ceiling, on the second, they rise to pony wall height. The floor space inside each cruciform is removed to reveal each fin and keep the space airy. The smooth blue and white surfaces take cues from the aesthetics of space travel and the pure blue sky. The result is a memorable and comfortable space that honors the cyclist and their place in the urban fabric the city. This is meant to be more than just a store, but a hub for the cycling community.
With generous glazing at street level, the space invites entry through the first of a series of human scaled cruciforms.

With stationary bikes and equipment, this space is ideal for testing products and physical conditioning.
The top portions of the cruciforms serve as space defining half walls on the second floor.
